SERIAN: To kick-start their 2020 activity calendar, Habitat for Indigenous and Urban Program (Hidup), recently presented school bags to pupils of SK Krait, Kampung Krait, in Kedup.

SK Krait, with a population of 98 pupils, is termed “Sekolah Kurang Murid (SKM)” or under-enrolled school, and is located about one-and-a-half hour’s drive from Kuching.

Following a plea from a teacher, Hidup spearheaded a campaign to aid the school’s less privileged pupils.

Headmaster Tony Kumundan said the school catered to three villages – Krait Mawang, Stubuh and Kranji Atas.

He praised the effort by Hidup and welcomed any future initiative with the organisation.

Tony further said that Japan Malaysia Association (JMA) had been working with SK Krait and other schools within the Kampung Krait locality.

JMA was established to serve public interest by fostering ties between the two countries and operate mainly in four areas – friendship exchange, tree planting, publication and seminars.

Tony also invited Hidup president George Young Si Ricord Jr and his committee to attend their upcoming fundraising dinner on Ja 31 at Chung Hwa School Hall in Serian.

He said funds raised from the dinner would be used for basic building maintenance and upkeep.

Meanwhile, George said Hidup would continuously be active in their commitment to raise public awareness on the plight of underprivileged students and schools within their area of service.

Hidup would also work with other civil societies, corporate bodies and political parties for the betterment of the communities.

George added that Hidup was willing to organise seminars and training programmes with parents and community leaders for a better understanding of their respective roles.
