Search continues for man who fell into Sarawak River

KUCHING: Search and rescue (SAR) operations for a man feared drowned after trying to rescue a woman who fell into the Sarawak River, entered Day Two on Friday (Jan 15).

The man, identified as Awangku Sahiful Awangku Sazali, 33, was said to be having an argument with the 27-year-old woman on the day of the incident around 12.50pm.

Petra Jaya fire chief Azaharul Sahari said the search on Friday started at 9.45am and involved various agencies such as the police, marine police, Civil Defence Force and the Sarawak Rivers Board.

Rescuers carried out surface search around the area where the victim is feared drowned.

Earlier, it was understood that the woman fell into the river and the victim tried to save her, with both swept away by the strong currents.

The woman was eventually rescued by employees of the Satok suspension bridge and rushed to hospital for treatment.
