KUCHING: The SSPCA Charity Christmas Carnival is back this year, a little earlier, but packed with more fun and activities for those who will be going to the Association of Churches building at Jalan Stampin on Sunday, from 10am to 4pm.

Besides food galore there will be lots of things for the families to do. We have arts and crafts from 10 am to 12 noon and then an art competition from 1230 to 2.30pm.

There will be three categories for this – for 6years to 8 years old then from 9 to 12 years and for everyone else there will be an Open category. An array of prizes ranging from SSPCA t-shirts to umbrellas and the 2018 SSPCA calendar is ready to be won. Come and have your photo taken wi th our two duck friends, Cheab and Cheeb, or take part in the Carnival games like the ping pong toss, the fishing pond or the paper aeroplane toss.

There will even be musical chairs and a Ham Chee Peng eating competition! For the more brave, there is the water dunking machine! Just remember to bring a towel or buy one at the carnival!; or just sit back and be serenaded by Christmas carols.

For those who want to provide a home for a new pet there will be lots of puppies and kittens ready for adoption, ready to find a new home. Come and help us raise funds for the over 350 animals at the shelter.

A certain individual, who regularly supports SSPCA fundraisers, said we did too much fund raising! So I had to explain to him that with 350 animals it costs us RM30,000 a month to run the shelter. Most of that cost goes to staff and food and medicine for the animals.

Each animal is given up to 3 vaccines plus the rabies vaccine, and neutered, these alone cost an average of RM200 per animal. We rely very much on public donations in order to sustain the shelter, and without active fundraising all year round there would be no way we could continue to run the shelter as it is now, especially with animals continuing to be so low on most peoples’ priority list.

Besides active fundraising this year, we have upped our efforts to get the awareness message out there, even though we are still short of educators. We give regular talks to schools on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership as well as involving some of the students by getting them to volunteer at the shelter.

We are always looking for volunteers, to come and help us at the shelter, to inspect complaints of animal abuse, to help with the Adoption Teams, to help foster a young animal. And we are always looking for quality staff, so if anyone out there thinks he or she would like to try a career in animal welfare, do approach us and let us know. You can call us at 082 618200 or email us at sarawakspca@ gmail.com.
