KUCHING: The Federation of the Chinese Associations Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions and Sarawak Eye creative agency had collaborated to produce a short film entitled “The Spirit Awakens”.
Done in conjunction with the Year of the Ox, this film is to showcase the local Chinese culture and traditional performances in Sarawak.
The five-minute short film will feature Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Abang Openg and his Cabinet ministers, who wish to send their Chinese New Year (CNY) greetings to the Chinese communities under the new norm in the digital era, as the state continues to fight against Covid-19 pandemic.
Sarawak Eye will be presenting the “The Spirit Awakens” this CNY with the support from president of the Federation of Chinese Associations Sarawak cum The Federation of the Chinese Associations Kuching, Samarahan & Serian Divisions, Sarawak, Datuk Richard Wee Liang Chiat,
“The Spirit Awakens” will be available to stream on Sarawak Eye official Facebook Page and Instagram on Chinese New Year Eve tomorrow (Feb 11).
The Chinese community will be having a quiet celebration due to various SOPs while lion dances and various traditional performances are disallowed.
The short film will showcase various traditional cultural traits, which are familiar to the Chinese community, which include the 24-Festive Drums, Cheongsam, Chinese music performances, lion dances, traditional dance performances, Wushu, Chinese diabolo and the Chinese opera to bring back the memories in order to continue preserving the traditional arts and culture.
The film is said to bring every Sarawakian back to all the familiar places and local lifestyle back home, as well as the love and passion for their culture and efforts to preserve it.
Several local Chinese arts and cultural performing groups, including The Dance Academy Kuching, Huang Lin Opera Group, Kenwy Music & Arts Academy, Chung Hua Middle School No.3 24 Festive Drums Team, Chung Hua Middle School No.4 Diabolo Club and Wushu Federation of Sarawak, traditional lion dance performance from Siniawan Town Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) had contributed to the success of the film.
Meanwhile, the shooting locations included the famous Malaysia-China Friendship Park, Carpenter Street, Siniawan old town, Kuching Waterfront, Kuching Hokkien Heritage Park, among others, to further promote the local culture and places in Kuching, Sarawak.
The film will also feature the three Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
Ministers, namely Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and Spouse, Utilities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Amar Michael Manyin Jawong, Welfare and Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah and Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
The film also features Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, Miri City Council (MCC) mayor Adam Yii, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting, Consul-General of China in Kuching Cheng Guangzhong and the Federation of Chinese Associations Sarawak cum The Federation of the Chinese Associations Kuching, Samarahan & Serian Divisions, Sarawak president Datuk Richard Wee Liang Chiat.
