KUCHING: Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) supports Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) proposal to form a Borneo Alliance among local based opposition parties in Sarawak and Sabah to face the 15th general election (GE 15).
Its president Lina Soo said she agrees with PSB president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh that a Borneo Alliance is timely.
“Borneans are fed up with the broken promises and exploitation by the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration since the formation of Malaysia in 1963.
“With Pakatan Harapan (PH) looking weak and unable to bring about the changes desired, Sarawakians are looking to a formidable third force to bring about a better future,” she told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted on Monday (Mar 28).
She said the people were looking for hope which only a strong united opposition could provide.
“A Sarawak and Sabah alliance can provide the key and the hope to a new beginning for Borneans,” she said.
However, she said all Borneo-based opposition parties must seriously engage in dialogue to make this goal achievable.
“And the party leaders must first set aside their egos and personal interests to make the plan for a united Borneo front to protect our interests against Malaya domination possible.
“Borneans are looking for hope, and a Borneo alliance can meet this urgent need, but all the Borneo opposition parties must show their wisdom, leadership and courage to convince the voters. Can they?
“Time will tell if Borneo political parties in the opposition are truly working for their own interests or if they are genuinely for the people,” she said.
Meanwhile, Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) president Bobby William, said the party is open to the proposal.
“But we will consider the nitty- gritty when the time comes,” he said.
On Sunday (Mar 27), Wong said that opposition parties in Sarawak and Sabah must work together as a united front.
“To this end, the PSB Elections Committee which leads the party’s preparation for GE15, is mandated to liaise with like-minded opposition parties in Sarawak and Sabah to formalise a Borneo Alliance which will be a credible and significant third force in federal politics.
“I am confident that the Borneo Alliance will have the support of Sarawakians and Sabahans as it offers for the first time a combined strategy and common purpose in our position within the federation.
“This synergistic partnership will be a leap forward for the Borneo states,” he said.
