KUCHING: The contractors and Public Works Department are facing a major challenge while expanding and upgrading Jalan Matang which is connection of underground electrical cable.

Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said that the cable from Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has existed throughout Jalan Matang for a long time but SEB lacks detailed information about its location.

“So this is what we must ensure the project’s safety, as electricity can be dangerous if it not properly maintained,” he said.

He also added that the recent setback could extend the completion time of the project which was initially estimated to take two years.

“That being said, I am optimistic that SEB is in the process of identifying the connection cable which would enable the contractors to upgrade the roads step by step,” he said.

He said this after officiating the E-Mart Ramadan Bazaar at E-Mart Matang today.

Earlier, it was reported that a new company had been appointed to take over the 4.4-kilometre Jalan Baru Matang project, which was dubbed the “sick project.”

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Unggah Embas said that the project involved widening the road from two lanes to four lanes. Additionally, the contractors would install 70 street lights along the road within three months.
