KUCHING: 23 years after Malaysia last staged a world bowling championship, the wait is finally over as the 2026 IBF World Youth Championships rolled on in Sarawak on Saturday (June 27).
The championship has drawn more than 350 athletes and officials from 34 countries and territories to Megalanes Sarawak in eMart Batu Kawa for 11 days of world-class competition.
Officiating at the opening ceremony, Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said hosting the championship reflected Sarawak’s growing reputation as an international sporting destination and Malaysia’s capability to stage world-class events.
“We are especially proud that this championship is being hosted in Sarawak, a state renowned for its hospitality, cultural diversity and commitment to sporting excellence,” he said.
The tournament features youth bowlers from across Asia, Europe, the Americas and Oceania, including powerhouses such as the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, Sweden, Germany and Finland.
Abdul Karim said the Sarawak Government remained committed to strengthening sports development through athlete programmes, coaching, competitions and improved facilities in collaboration with national and international stakeholders.
“The hosting of this championship is itself a testament to our commitment.
“It provides an invaluable opportunity for our young athletes to compete against the world’s best while inspiring a new generation of bowlers throughout Malaysia and the region,” he said.
The championship is the first IBF world event to be held in Malaysia since 2003.
Abdul Karim urged the competitors to compete with integrity, respect and sportsmanship, saying the friendships and experiences gained would be just as meaningful as the medals on offer.
He also thanked the International Bowling Federation (IBF), Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC), Amateur Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS), sponsors, volunteers and organisers for bringing the championship to Kuching.
Abdul Karim then officially declared the 2026 IBF World Youth Championships open.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, IBF vice-president Marios Nicolaides, MTBC president Datuk Najeeb Abdullah, ABAS president Sunny Si Poh Heng and Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim.
