NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday became the first country to land a spacecraft on the moon’s largely unexplored south pole.
The Chandrayaan-3 moon mission was launched on July 14. Its lander module detached from the propulsion system a few days ago and the “soft”, or controlled, landing began at 5.44 pm India time on Wednesday.
“Chandrayaan-3 has successfully soft-landed on the moon,” the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the space agency and scientists on the achievement, saying the whole nation is celebrating the historic moment. – BERNAMA-dpa
