KUCHING: The directive from the Ministry of Education (MoE) to all national schools to hold fundraisers during “Palestinian Solidarity Week” from Oct 29 to Nov 3 and to play films and songs related to humanitarian issues in Palestine has drawn strong criticism.

In a press statement on Thursday (Oct 26), Publicity and Information Secretary of the Sarawak People’s United Party (SUPP) Central Youth, Kelvin Hii, expressed his displeasure and questioned why education is being associated with war.

He emphasised that while the Israel-Palestine conflict is indeed a global matter, Malaysia, being a diverse, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious nation, should refrain from direct involvement in a conflict resolution.

“Education should be a neutral sphere aimed at cultivating students’ critical thinking and values, rather than serving as a means to propagate specific political viewpoints.

“I found it puzzling that the MoE is requiring schools to conduct fundraising activities and screen films and songs related to humanitarian issues in Palestine.

“The war is inherently tragic, and the ministry’s decision seems to be an attempt to leverage this tragedy for fundraising, which is not appropriate in Malaysia, a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.

“I question whether this decision by them (ministry) had received cabinet approval or if it was the initiative of specific individuals or groups.”

He was of the opinion that Malaysia is progressing toward recovery and should steer clear of policies that might inflame social discontent.

Despite Malaysia’s Constitution designating Islam as the state religion under Article 3, Article 11 explicitly ensures religious freedom. Thus, an overemphasis on any single political perspective should be averted.

He further stressed that Sarawak has consistently maintained an atmosphere of openness, religious freedom, and racial harmony.

The state has been unwavering in its commitment to prevent the infiltration of divisive ideologies. Regrettably, education remains under federal jurisdiction.

“This incident highlights the necessity for Sarawak to reclaim autonomy over its education system so that it can develop educational policies in accordance with local constitutional and cultural values, rather than being compelled to implement federal government policies.

“I believe that ministers from multi-ethnic and multi-religious parties People’s Justice Party, as well as the deputy Minister of Education from the Democratic Action Party, should respond to this matter.”

In reference to the Israel-Palestine conflict, he conveyed profound regret and emphasised the importance of preventing all forms of warfare.

He offered his condolences to those who have suffered losses of life, property, freedom, and loved ones due to the conflict.

He also advocated for the nurturing of future generations, encouraging them to promote peace, mutual affection, and harmonious coexistence through education.
