SIBU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s visit here Saturday threw the spotlight on environmental conservation and community engagement.

He witnessed the presentation of the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) certificate to the Bukit Lima Nature Reserve, which was recognised as the “Largest Protected Urban Peat Swamp Nature Reserve”, further cementing its position as one of the country’s significant conservation areas.

The certificate was presented by Malaysia Book of Records officer Megat Faris Hussein Megat Muzaffar Shah to Sibu Resident Superi Awang Said and Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) general manager Abang Arabi Abang Aimran during the Brisk Walk Programme held at the nature reserve.

Accompanying Abang Johari during the programme were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operation) Datuk Hii Chang Kee and heads of departments.

Apart from witnessing the recognition ceremony, Abang Johari also joined participants in the brisk walk to promote a healthy lifestyle while raising public awareness on the importance of preserving the environment.

He later witnessed the release of a pangolin, symbolising Sarawak’s continued efforts in protecting wildlife and conserving the state’s biodiversity, before carrying out a symbolic tree-planting activity at the reserve in support of environmental sustainability.

Following the programme, the Premier continued his engagement with the local community during an informal visit to Sibu Central Market.

Arriving at about 7.50 am, Abang Johari enjoyed Sibu’s iconic kampua mee and traditional kuih at a food stall while mingling with community leaders, traders and members of the public.

His presence drew the attention of visitors and traders, who took the opportunity to greet him, exchange pleasantries and take photographs together.

The Premier also toured the market’s operations and stopped at several stalls to purchase goods from traders.
