Man gets jail for trying to steal cables

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday sentenced a local man to five months in jail for attempting to steal cables that caused electricity supply to be cut off in a government office building.

Mohamad Iskandar Helmi, 31, from Kampung Sri Arjuna pleaded guilty to a charge which was read before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.

According to the charge, Mohamad Iskandar was with three men, who are still at large, committed the offence by the roadside in front of a government office building in Jalan Puncak Borneo at about 12.20 am on Nov 8 this year.

Therefore, he was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 511 and Section 34 of the same Code.

Based on the facts of the case, at the time of the incident, the complainant, an employee of Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) received a call from one of his colleagues informing him the electricity supply had been cut off in a government office building at Jalan Puncak Borneo.

Later, the complainant along with three SEB auxiliary police personnel and five technicians were sent to the scene and found the four men digging the ground for electric cables.

Three suspects managed to escape while the accused was arrested with equipment at hand used for digging such as a machete, an iron cutter, a hacksaw, a hoe and a sledgehammer.

As a result of the investigation, it was found that the accused along with three accomplices who are still at large were digging the ground with the intention of stealing cables belonging to SEB.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case while the accused was not represented by a legal counsel.
