SUPP sounds dengue alarm amid rainy spell

KUCHING: Dengue cases are expected to spike with the onset of the monsoon, thus necessitating greater awareness and efforts to preveny any outbreak in the community.

Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Batu Kitang organising secretary Gerald Goh said with the coming of the rain, it is expected that there will be a surge in the number of dengue cases in the coming months.

“It is critical that all residents and stakeholders take immediate action to suppress the aedes mosquito population and break disease transmission.

“Concerted community action and sustained vector control efforts will prevent further escalation of dengue cases.

“In order to avert a major dengue outbreak, residents in areas where the dengue alert is high should regularly practise ‘anti mosquito measures’ and to take urgent collective action to reduce mosquito breeding habitats in the fight against the spread of dengue fever,” he said in a statement Saturday (Jan 13).

Earlier, Goh and the SUPP Batu Kitang team participated in a gotong-royong campaign organised by the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) for the Mile 3-6 area in collaboration with the Resident’s Office as well as Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to clear rubbish within the area together.

He urged all homeowners within the vicinity to join in the gotong royong and help to take immediate action to prevent mosquito breeding.

Goh said there is a dire need to call for intensive and concerted community efforts to search for and remove stagnant water within each community.

“The effort should start now with the coming of the rainy season and it should cover two mosquito breeding cycles, helping to reduce the mosquito population and thus dengue risk,” he added.
