MUKAH: While the fire brigade shoulders the critical responsibility of extinguishing fires upon receiving calls, it is the responsibility of the residents to ensure the safety of their family and household.
Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) Zone 4 chief Andy Alie therefore urged every member of the community to equip themselves with fire prevention knowledge, especially the use of fire extinguishers as a first step in dealing with fires.
“With the knowledge of fire prevention, residents can ensure that their homes are safe from the risk of fire.
“If there is a fire in a residential house at an early stage, the occupants of the house can put out the fire when it is still small and help save their respective family members,” he said.
He said this during the Festive Season Fire Safety Programme and Fire Extinguisher Handover organised by the P.213 Mukah Service Centre in collaboration with the Mukah BOMBA held at Pehin Setia Raja Square here on Saturday.
Furthermore, he pointed out that statistics have shown that fires involving residential houses are mostly caused by gas appliance malfunctions in kitchens and electrical system failures.
As such, he welcomes initiatives aimed at curbing the rising trend of fire incidents, particularly in rural areas like longhouses and villages.
The fire safety campaign during festive season is an ongoing effort by the BOMBA to expand public awareness of the importance of fire prevention and appropriate actions in the event of an emergency.
