KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has dismissed allegations concerning its financial management and municipal service delivery, describing them as false, misleading and lacking proper context.
In a statement on Thursday (Jul 2), the council said the allegations persisted despite transparent explanations based on its audited financial statements, accusing certain parties of selectively using financial figures to misrepresent MBKS’ actual financial position.
According to MBKS, the figures cited failed to distinguish between operational revenue and restricted funds such as government grants, project allocations and other monies earmarked for specific purposes, which cannot be used as general operating funds.
“Maintaining adequate financial reserves is a fundamental responsibility of every well-managed local authority.
“These reserves ensure the continuity of essential services, fund long-term infrastructure projects and enable the council to respond to future obligations and emergencies,” the statement said.
MBKS said it has consistently invested in public infrastructure and municipal services, including roads, drainage, flood mitigation, public health, waste management, parks, Smart City initiatives, environmental programmes and community development projects throughout Kuching South.
It pointed out claims that public services had been neglected were unfounded.
The council also rejected allegations relating to an area featured in a circulated video, explaining that development for the location had already been identified under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13).
It said implementation of the project, like all public infrastructure developments, is subject to planning priorities, technical assessments, funding availability and the necessary approvals.
MBKS reiterated that it welcomed fair, evidence-based public scrutiny but stressed that accountability must be grounded in complete and accurate information rather than selective or misleading narratives.
While noting that it had exercised restraint in responding to the allegations, the council warned that it would not hesitate to pursue legal action against any individual or organisation that continues to publish or circulate false, misleading or defamatory statements after the facts had been clarified.
MBKS reaffirmed its commitment to responsible governance, prudent financial management, effective municipal service delivery, and transparency in serving the public.
