38 foreigners rounded up in immigration raids

BINTULU: A series of operations conducted around town here yesterday (Mar 16), have resulted in the arrest of 38 individuals of various foreign nationalities.

The Sarawak Immigration Department said that the raids were held at 14 locations with known presence of undocumented migrants such as factories, commercial lots, construction sites and shared residences.

Acting on public tip-offs and intelligence gathering, the Bintulu Immigration Enforcement Unit inspected the documentations of 113 individuals in multiple operations codenamed ‘Ops Belanja, ‘Ops Kutip’, ‘Ops Gegar’, ‘Ops Sapu’, and ‘Ops Mahir’.

Of the figure, 38 foreigners were taken into custody for committing various offences such as overstaying, passport misuse and lacking valid travel documents.

All foreign detainees were arrested under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

In view of this, the public is urged to report any information regarding the presence of undocumented migrants in their areas through established channels or directly to the nearest Immigration Enforcement Office.
