KUCHING: As property values continue to rise in Malaysia, the public is increasingly faced with the decision of whether to buy or rent property, a dilemma particularly acute among young adults starting new life chapters or moving out of their parents’ homes.

The cost of housing has steadily increased, reflecting less economic stability compared to previous years. Despite earning their own income, many young adults must still address their basic need for housing.

“I think I will buy my own property now because who wouldn’t want their own place?” said John Tyler, 27, in an interview with New Sarawak Tribune.

“Owning your property feels more official than just ‘borrowing’ someone else’s land to live on.

“Even though our salaries can’t keep up with the rising property prices, it’s better to buy once you’ve saved enough,” added John, who works at a local bakery.

The decision to buy property often hinges on one’s job and long-term commitments.

“I would buy a property depending on the specifics of the property. If it’s a long-term investment, buying is preferable to renting because renting ultimately costs more,” said Anisa Paya Jose, a 24-year-old design and communications professional.

“For me, it all depends on my career, but ideally, I’d like to own a property in the long run,” said Shane Philip, another 24-year-old.

For others like Sharizal, a 23-year-old employee at LONGi, renting is less appealing.

“Buying is better because it spares me from worrying about housing. When you rent, you’re still left figuring out where to live without the burden of rental fees,” he said.
