KUCHING: Seventeen schools participated in a three-day Simunjan District Primary School Kelab Pencinta Alam Sekitar (PALS) conference from May 10.
It was held by the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), in collaboration with the Simunjan District Education Office (PPD) and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Abang Kadir Gedong.
The conference saw active participation from 73 students and 54 teachers representing 17 schools in the Simunjan district.
Sarawak Environmental Quality Controller, Jack Liam, who officiated at its closing emphasised the significance of environmental sustainability and the critical role of students in addressing climate change.
He encouraged students to adopt sustainable practices such as reducing energy consumption and practicing the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle).

The main objective of the conference was to provide a platform to exchange information and skills related to environmental care.
It aimed to heighten students’ awareness and sense of responsibility regarding environmental preservation and quality control, while also fostering collaboration among students, teachers, and stakeholders.
Since its inception in 1999, the PALS Club, supported by the State Education Department (JPNS), has been instrumental in promoting environmental awareness among students in Sarawak.
With 473 schools participating statewide, PALS aims to instill values of sustainability and social responsibility in young minds.
