SIBURAN: The Gawai Dayak Carnival 2024 at Kampung Masaan Siburan celebrates and preserves the rich cultural heritage of Sarawak’s diverse communities, said Datuk Dr. Jerip Susil.
The Deputy Minister of Transport (Land and Air) emphasised the carnival’s goals to promote Gawai, sustain traditional and creative arts among Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, and other ethnic groups, and foster inter-community harmony in Serian.
“The carnival not only offers a celebration of our cultural heritage but also provides opportunities for education, training, and entrepreneurship through various programmes.
“The education and career carnival, community upskilling programme, and sales booths are key features aimed at empowering the local community,” Dr Jerip said.

Tthe carnival promises an array of engaging activities from June 6 to June 8, including community upskilling courses in sewing, pastry making, and air-conditioning repair.
Additionally, educational exhibitions featuring 17 institutions, traditional sports like blowpipe and slingshot competitions, and a vibrant concert showcasing local bands and cultural performances are set to draw crowds.
He added that one of the highlights of the Gawai Dayak celebration is the Final Dayung Sangon and Dari Pogan competition, scheduled for June 8.
“These events not only provide participants a chance to win prizes but also offer invaluable experiences and the opportunity to make history through their involvement,” he noted.
The carnival’s programmes are free and open to all, and Dr. Jerip encouraged local residents to participate and contribute to the lively atmosphere in Siburan.
He expressed hope that the community would come together to enjoy and enrich the carnival.
