DISNEY continues its streak of live-action remakes with the announcement of a new project based on the beloved 2010 animated film “Tangled”.
Reports reveal that director Michael Gracey, best known for “The Greatest Showman”, is in talks to take the helm of the live-action adaptation. The screenplay is being developed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who is also directing Sony’s reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer”.
The original Disney animation reimagined the Brothers Grimm tale of Rapunzel, featuring the princess (voiced by Mandy Moore) with magical, long hair.
In the story, Rapunzel teams up with Flynn Rider (voiced by Zachary Levi), a charming outlaw, to escape her tower and discover the source of the sky lanterns released every year on her birthday.
Unbeknownst to her, the lanterns are a tribute to her as the long-lost princess, kidnapped as a baby.
“Tangled” was a box office hit, earning over US$590 million globally. Its song “I See the Light” was nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.
It’s currently unclear if any of its star-studded cast, including Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy, will be returning for this adaptation.
This announcement follows Disney’s recent live-action projects, including “Mufasa: The Lion King”, set to release this month, and “Snow White”, starring Rachel Zegler, scheduled for March 2025. With “Tangled” now in development, Disney continues to bring its animated classics to life on the big screen.
