KUCHING: Vegetable prices at the Mile 7 wet market here are experiencing significant fluctuations, with heavy rains impacting supply, said vendors.

“For example, kailan can cost RM12 per kilogramme or RM4 per bunch,” said a vegetable seller who wished to be known only as Madam Kong.

“During sunny weather, prices are lower, sometimes as low as RM3 per bunch. But the rain has made it difficult for suppliers to get the vegetables to us.”

Chicken prices, however, remain stable.

“We’re still selling chicken at RM11.60 per kilogramme,” said Mohd Rafie Osman, a chicken seller.

“This price has been consistent, even before Christmas, and we will maintain it for the New Year as well.”

He anticipates increased demand closer to New Year’s Eve, with many families opting for home BBQs.

A nearby grocery store offers competitive prices.

“Our prices are generally lower than the wet market because we don’t operate as wholesalers,” said Hamzah Ila, a store employee.

“Chicken is only RM9.80 per kilogramme, tiger prawns are around RM33 per kilogramme, and our most expensive fish is about RM28 per kilogramme.”

However, Hamzah acknowledged that vegetable prices can sometimes be high due to supply disruptions caused by the unpredictable weather.

“Heavy rains can damage crops and reduce yields, leading to higher prices,” he said.
