SIMUNJAN: Water supply to Simunjan is expected to resume from the Serian Water Treatment Plant (WTP) by late Saturday afternoon (Aug 1) following ongoing repair works on a burst pipe along Jalan Gedong-Simunjan.
The leakage, which occurred on July 31, was triggered by a contractor carrying out excavation and drain-clearing works, exacerbating an already critical water shortage in the district.
Simunjan assemblyman, Awla Dris, explained that the Simunjan WTP has been unable to operate at full capacity since July 28 due to critically low water levels at its intake point.
“Therefore, the water supply to Simunjan is currently entirely dependent on the Serian WTP, which is channelled through the Gedong Booster Pump,” he wrote in his Facebook post today.
He noted that once the pipe repair works are completed, continuous water supply from the Serian WTP to the Simunjan area will be restored.
To mitigate the immediate impact on residents, the Samarahan Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) has stepped up water delivery using tankers, though demand remains exceptionally high.
The department has also borrowed 16 water tanks from JBALB Kuching to assist affected residents.
Additionally, JBALB Samarahan is in the process of setting up centralized water collection tanks at several strategic locations to ensure residents have easier access to clean water.
Awla assured the public that JBALB is fully committed to addressing the disruption and stabilising the water supply, expressing his appreciation for the cooperation and patience of the affected residents.
