BINTANGOR: A motorcyclist was killed after his motorcycle struck a pedestrian who allegedly crossed the road suddenly near the Jalan Buan junction here early this morning.
Meradong Police Chief, DSP Tansli Mering, said the 6:00 am accident involved a Honda Beat motorcycle ridden by 23-year-old Mohd Rohaizzad Syazwan Abdullah of Kampung Abang Amin and a 20-year-old male pedestrian.
Preliminary investigations found that the victim was travelling from Bintangor town towards Taman Bintang when the pedestrian, who was standing on the left road shoulder, suddenly attempted to cross the road.
“The motorcyclist did not have sufficient time to avoid the collision as the distance between them was too close,” he said.
Following the impact, the motorcycle skidded onto the left road shoulder, throwing and dragging the rider along the road surface.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical assistant from the Bintangor Health Clinic at 6:39 am due to severe injuries.
The pedestrian sustained minor injuries to his right hand and leg and was taken to Sarikei Hospital for further treatment.
Police have also taken a blood sample from the pedestrian for alcohol and drug screening as part of the investigation.
The victim’s body was sent to Sarikei Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
