MIRI: Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has reiterated his commitment to championing the needs of independent Chinese schools, pledging increased support and advocacy for these institutions.

He acknowledged the unique challenges faced by independent Chinese schools, which, unlike fully government-funded institutions, do not receive direct federal allocations for infrastructure.

At the same time, they do not enjoy the same level of support as Chinese private schools, which are often prioritised by nationwide community organisations.

In addressing this issue, Chiew emphasised his commitment to raising the profile of independent Chinese schools in parliament.

“I will continue to advocate for increased federal funding for Sekolah Bantuan Kerajaan (SBK), including our beloved Chung Hua Miri Middle School,” he said at the 2025 Chinese New Year gathering organised by Imasa Dinasti Sdn Bhd (TAK Group of Companies) for the Miri Chung Hua Middle School alumni and board of directors.

The event, held yesterday (Jan 26) evening, also marked the handing over of the Teo Teng Huan Tuition Scholarship to SMK Chung Hua Miri Middle School.

Chiew praised the generosity of alumnus and architect, Teo Ah Khing, who announced a significant donation through the Teo Teng Huan Education Foundation to benefit the school.

“Our deepest gratitude goes to Teo, whose contributions are a testament to the enduring spirit of our alumni. SMK Chung Hua Miri alumni will always remain one of the pillars supporting our alma mater,” Chiew said.

Since assuming office in November 2022, Chiew has on his part allocated RM132,000 from his constituency development fund across 2023 and 2024 to support the school’s infrastructure and asset purchases.

An additional RM20,000 has been directed towards school activities over the same period.

During the gathering, he announced a further RM100,000 allocation for 2025, earmarked for asset purchases and maintenance for the school’s boarding facilities.

The evening’s event was graced by Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, Miri Mayor Adam Yi, and Teo, who is also chairman of the TAK Group of Companies.
