KUCHING: A delegation from the Atlantic Council Millennium Leadership Programme Malaysia Study Tour acknowledged Sarawak’s strong commitment to renewable energy and sustainability following their visit to the Borneo Cultures Museum on Monday (Feb 10).

Head of Delegation Jonah Fisher praised Sarawak’s efforts in diversifying its energy mix, particularly through hydrogen and solar power, calling it a progressive step toward global net-zero goals.

“I am extremely impressed by the climate ambitions here in Sarawak.

“While some countries are stepping back and relying more on oil and gas, Sarawak is moving forward with renewable energy, especially hydrogen and solar,” he said to the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) after attending a briefing with Sarawak Energy senior vice president for Strategy and Corporate Development Dr Chen Shiun, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Energy chief executive officer Dennis Harus Wong, and a representative from Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).

Fisher also noted Sarawak’s increasing significance within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), describing it as a key player in the region’s economic expansion.

“Everyone is saying that ASEAN will become the fourth-largest regional economy, and Sarawak will be a key engine in that growth,” he added.

Beyond energy and development, Fisher shared the delegation’s enthusiasm for gaining deeper insights into Malaysia and Sarawak, emphasising that the region’s identity extends beyond its wildlife and national parks.

The 25-member delegation is in Malaysia to study economic and sustainability initiatives, with their visit to Sarawak reinforcing the state’s rising global influence in green energy and development.
