KUCHING: Eight frustrated consumers have turned to the police after failing to get refunds from a Selangor-based travel agency offering Umrah packages, with losses amounting to tens of thousands of ringgit.

The National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sarawak revealed that dozens more have filed similar complaints.

Recently, its branch chairman Wynson Ong Teck Ping assisted them in lodging the reports at Sungai Maong police station to push for an investigation and action against the agency.

“According to the report, the complainants were scheduled to perform Umrah in 2023. However, just two days after their scheduled departure to Kuala Lumpur, the travel agency suddenly issued a memo announcing a price hike for the package.

“In addition, the complainants claimed the agency failed to provide essential preparations, including flight tickets and other necessities promised for the pilgrimage.

“As a result, each complainant suffered significant losses, with total losses amounting to tens of thousands of Ringgit Malaysia,” the council said in a statement.

MTPN Sarawak assured that they remain committed to defending consumer rights and ensuring service providers adhere to the industry standards.

“We will continue to monitor this case and work with authorities to ensure justice is served. All consumers are urged to exercise caution and conduct thorough checks before committing to any service package,” the council said.
