SEMATAN: Residents of Tanjong Datu have been urged to take on the role of ‘ambassadors’ for their region to showcase its natural beauty and promote it on the world stage, following the recognition of Gunung Pueh as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
According to Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Pehin Sri Adenan, the recognition of Gunung Pueh as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserve is expected to attract international tourists to Sematan.
“With Gunung Pueh being recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Site, we cannot imagine the level of international tourist attraction to Sematan, where they will come to witness firsthand what Sematan has to offer as a model site that demonstrates excellent management of human-nature relationships and environmental conservation.
“For that reason, the residents of Tanjong Datu, whether in Sematan, Lundu, or Sampadi, are urged to become ‘ambassadors’ for our region, explaining and promoting it so that people worldwide can learn about Tanjong Datu, which is rich in natural beauty.
“This includes six attractions such as Gunung Gading National Park, Tanjung Datu, Kubah, Matang, Pueh, and Talang-Talang Island,” he said during the Official Launch of the Communication, Educational and Public Awareness (CEPA) at the UNESCO Biosphere Site in Sematan yesterday (Feb 25).
Furthermore, he said that this supports his vision of transforming Tanjong Datu into a thriving tourism hub that strengthens the local economy while maintaining a balance between development and environmental conservation.
“While we take care of the people, we must also care for animals,” he cited the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem during his tenure as Chief Minister of Sarawak.
This is especially significant, as research has revealed numerous new species in Lundu, Sematan, and Telok Melano, soon to be introduced to the world.
Deputy director of Sarawak Forestry (Forest Conservation and Development Happysupina Sait and Lundu District Officer Awang Yusup Awang Mostapha, were also present at the launching.
