KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s solar industry must explore alternative markets, particularly in ASEAN, to reduce reliance on the US, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) said.

This comes as the US imposes tariffs on solar panel imports from four Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia. MITI, representing the government, is engaged in the US countervailing and anti-dumping probe.

“MITI is committed to defending Malaysia’s solar industry by refuting unfounded allegations and providing stakeholder-driven feedback,” the ministry said in an oral reply on Parliament’s official website.

Responding to Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) on the tariffs’ impact, MITI stressed that Malaysia’s investment incentives comply with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules and have not harmed the US solar sector.

The ministry also called for stronger ASEAN cooperation to fortify supply chains and urged investment in green technology R&D to position Malaysia as a regional hub. – BERNAMA
