KUCHING: Sarawak Delta Geopark (SDGp) continues to strengthen its efforts towards recognition as a Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) with the organization of a Self-Assessment Workshop held at the Waterfront Hotel over three days (March4 to 6).
This workshop is a crucial step in ensuring that all criteria set by Unesco are met in preparation for the official evaluation by the Unesco Global Geopark committee.
“The workshop brings together agencies under SDGp Governance along with SDGp advisors to assess the current status of SDGp and identify aspects that need to be strengthened to meet Unesco’s standards,” according to a press statement by SDGp on Thursday (March 6).
Key focus areas include geological conservation, environmental sustainability, community empowerment, sustainable economic development, as well as promotion and education related to geoparks.
Sarawak Forest director Datuk Hamden Mohammad stressed the importance of continuous coordination among all stakeholders to ensure the success of Sarawak Delta Geopark in achieving global status.
“The achievement of Unesco Global Geopark status will not only elevate Sarawak’s profile as a world-class geotourism destination but also bring economic and social benefits to local communities through sustainable tourism empowerment and community development programs,” he stated.
With the organisation of this workshop, Sarawak Delta Geopark is moving closer to realising its dream of becoming a Unesco-recognised Global Geopark.
“All parties are urged to continue providing support and commitment to ensure this success for the long-term benefit of Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole,” Hamden added.
