SIBU: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief has voiced concern over the recent incident involving Abdul Razak Ismail, who was discharged not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA), after slapping a non-Muslim individual.

Kevin Lau condemned the act, emphasising that such behaviour has no place in a multiracial and multi-religious society like Malaysia.

“I am deeply troubled by this incident.

“Violence in any form is unequivocally wrong and cannot be condoned.

“As Malaysians, we must uphold the values of mutual respect and understanding,” he said in a media statement.

He stressed that Malaysia’s strength lies in its diversity and the ability of Malaysians to coexist harmoniously despite the racial and religious differences.

Furthermore, he highlighted the significance of Ramadan, where he shared that many of his Muslim friends view it as a time of spiritual discipline, self-control, and increased empathy, values that should guide societal interactions.

Lau also expressed his concern over the extensive media coverage the case has received, with reports appearing in international outlets such as the South China Morning Post, Singapore Straits Times, and CNA.

He warned that such widespread attention could harm Malaysia’s global reputation as a peaceful and tolerant nation.

“It is painful to witness such acts.

“We must always remember that our strength as a nation lies in our diversity and our ability to live in peace despite our differences,” he added.

Lau urged all Malaysians to remain calm and refrain from provocative statements or actions, as well as calling for collective effort to strengthen intercommunity relations.

He emphasised the need for authorities to handle the case with fairness and transparency to maintain public confidence in the judicial system.

“Let us take this incident as a reminder that violence should never be the answer.

“Instead, we must focus on dialogue, empathy, and understanding to build stronger relationships among our communities,” he said.
