SIBU: Police have detained a Chinese national in connection with the accident that claimed the life of Sabah State Court Director Marutin Pagan on Sunday (March 30).

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed that the 42-year-old man has been remanded until Friday (April 4) to assist in investigations into the fatal accident.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

According to a statement issued on Sunday, the crash occurred at the Kanowit-Durin roundabout and involved a Toyota Fortuner and a Proton X70.

Marutin, 56, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from the vehicle.

“The victim was travelling with four others in the Fortuner, which was driven by a 28-year-old woman.

“Investigations found that the Fortuner was heading to Sibu from Kanowit when it was hit by the X70 upon reaching the roundabout.

“The impact caused the Fortuner to overturn, throwing one of its passengers from the vehicle,” he said.

The Chinese national driving the X70 escaped unhurt, while the four other individuals in the Fortuner sustained minor injuries and were treated at Kanowit Hospital.
