MIRI: A meaningful moment unfolded at Miri Hospital on Thursday as it carried out its fifth organ donation surgery, marking the first transplant procedure reported in Sarawak for this year.
The operation involved a 43-year-old male donor who had pledged his organs through official registration back in 2014.
His longstanding commitment to organ donation was honoured posthumously, with his kidney donated to a patient in need thus giving the patient a new lease on life.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the hospital described the act as a profound gift – “a final gesture of compassion from an individual with a noble heart”.
The transplant surgery was performed by specialists from Sarawak General Hospital, Aaron Goh and Kamal Raj, with the procedure supported by the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC).
The team included Dr Engku Emilia Engku Awang, Mohammad Aliff Abdullah and urology nurses, Siti Zulaikha Mohd Sidek and Liz Estevera Gabin.
Also involved were Dr Uma Devi Ramadass from the Hospital Organ Procurement Unit (UPOH) at Sarawak General Hospital, and members of Miri Hospital’s senior clinical team, who worked closely to ensure the operation proceeded smoothly.
While this marks the fifth case of organ donation coordinated by Miri Hospital, the facility highlighted the significance of each case, not just as a medical achievement, but as an expression of love and humanity.
“Our heartfelt condolences and utmost gratitude go out to the family of the donor.
“In the midst of loss, they found the strength to uphold his final wish, bringing hope and renewed life to another,” it said.
The hospital pointed out that such acts carry far-reaching impact – not only saving lives but also inspiring awareness about the importance of organ donation across the community.
