KANOWIT: Councillors must act as problem-solvers and not pass the buck when residents seek help, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee has stressed.
The Deputy Minister for Housing, Public Health and Local Government made the call when officiating the swearing-in ceremony of the new Kanowit District Council councillors for the 2025-2028 term at Kanowit District Office today (April 22).
“Councillors occupy a critical position in the governance structure of the community – they are the bridge between the local government and the people.
“The people come to us (councillors) because they look up to us and have confidence in us. When they come with problems, issues or needs, we should not let them leave empty-handed.
“In our capability, we must try to find solutions – not ask them to find solutions elsewhere.
“This council should be a place where issues are addressed, not redirected.”
Tiang pointed out that the councillors’ responsibilities are varied and weighty as they will be involved in decision-making that impacts infrastructure development, public services, and community wellbeing.
He added that they are also tasked with ensuring transparent, accountable governance and promoting solutions to city-level challenges such as housing, waste management, transportation, and economic development.
“Councillors must uphold the principles of fairness and justice, ensuring that every member of the community is treated equitably.
“To our newly appointed councillors, your journey begins today. Be courageous, compassionate, and committed to serving the people and pursuing excellence.
“Leadership is not merely about occupying a position—it is about making a difference,” Tiang stressed.
