KUCHING: New members for Serian District Council (SDC) are urged to disseminate information on the current initiatives and development projects in Serian.

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister cum Tarat assemblyman, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said that councillors are the frontliners of the state government.

“You are the eyes and ears for the government, and the task and responsibility have been entrusted to you.

“Whatever projects that had been done or ongoing, you have to also help disseminate information to the people, especially on the new opportunities that are available, so that they can improve their livelihood.

“Not just in the business aspect, it also includes getting more skilled workers,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the swearing-in ceremony for members of the Serian District Council (2025-2028 term) at Grand Margherita Hotel here today.

On another matter, Sagah was informed by Serian Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem, that the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) in Serian has begun its operation, with the hope that there will be more courses offered.

“Not only that, we have Sarawak Skills, Centre for Technical Excellence (CENTEXS), these are very important to our younger generation.

“Other initiatives including free education for Sarawakians by 2026, alongside courses related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities, we have to get the people to look forward to that.

“This sort of information we have to disseminate to our people,” he added.

He also urged new councillors to get to know the rules and the regulations that are used by their fellow councillors.

“It is not absolute power nor it is absolute authority, you have to act with the proper laws and regulations.

“Most importantly, do not get yourself involved too much in the council’s business, as conflict of interest might be happening between you and other staff,” he added.
