KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has accepted the sole nomination to serve as the president of the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (PERKIM) for the 2025–2028 term.
The Premier extended his heartfelt appreciation to PERKIM members for their trust and support in nominating him to lead the organisation.
“I accept this nomination with humility and a strong sense of responsibility.
“I wish to thank all members of PERKIM for their unwavering support,” he said In a statement today.
Abang Johari also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has held the position since 2006, acknowledging his significant contributions and steadfast leadership throughout the years.
“I will do my utmost to continue his efforts, especially in realising the vision and mission of PERKIM’s founding leaders, notably the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, in championing the welfare of the Muslim community,” he added.
Abang Johari also thanked Arau MP Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim, who is the current vice president of PERKIM, and representative in the Muslim Hukama’ Council Datuk Mohd Nakhaei Ahmad for withdrawing from the nomination process and pledging their support for his appointment.
The announcement marks a new chapter for PERKIM as it looks to further strengthen its role in the social and spiritual development of the Muslim community nationwide.
