KUCHING: Amendments to the Sarawak Labour Ordinance would be fully enforced to safeguard the rights and welfare of workers.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, said these also include workers in rural and remote areas.

He stressed that the Sarawak Labour Department (JTK) would play a critical role in ensuring the effective implementation and enforcement of all legislative amendments, which officially came into effect on 1 May.

“We are confident that JTK Sarawak will take this responsibility seriously. The purpose of these amendments is to protect our workforce, who are key drivers in the state’s development.

“With these changes, Sarawakian workers will now benefit from more comprehensive protection and can work in safer and more secure environments,” he said during the ‘Juh Randau’ interview session by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) recently.

To address challenges in rural areas, he said the government, through JTK, is actively conducting comprehensive engagement programmes across the state, involving workers, trade unions and employers.

According to him, these efforts aim to raise awareness of the shared responsibility in complying with employment-related laws and regulations.

While full monitoring at every location remains a challenge, workers are strongly encouraged to report any instances of non-compliance by their employers.
