BINTULU: Tragedy struck at Rumah Cali, Jalan Ulu Sebauh, Kampung Serak here last night where a fire broke out, devastating a 12-door wooden longhouse and displacing 89 residents.
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said among the residents was a 65-year-old woman who sustained minor injuries to her face.
“The woman was treated on-site by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) personnel before being taken to the hospital by her family for further medical care,” it said in a statement.
Bomba said the fire completely destroyed the longhouse, which measured 400 by 200 square feet.
The department added its station here received an emergency call at 10.40 pm and a team of 10 personnel were immediately deployed to the scene.
The location was 45km away the fire station.
In a race against time, the fire and rescue team transported firefighting equipment across the river using a boat, as the longhouse was situated on the opposite bank.
Firefighting efforts were carried out using two 200-foot hoses connected to a ground hydrant and one 200-foot hose drawing water from the nearby river.
Meanwhile, investigations into the cause of the blaze are ongoing.
