SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Central Zone Youth Chief, Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, has called on politicians to stop politicising Affin Bank’s dedit cards, urging them instead to focus on the broader benefits the bank brings to Sarawak.
“One cannot help but wonder about the obsession of some opposition leaders with incessantly politicising the presence of hornbills on Affin Bank’s credit cards,” he said in a statement today.
Lau suggested that such political antics amounted to nothing more than “playing to the gallery”, adding that leaders with true substance would be focused on long-term efforts to deliver real benefits to the people.
“While Sarawak continues to grow with innovative ideas and break glass ceilings for the benefit of its people, some seem stuck in a vicious cycle of cynicism and pessimism,” he added.
Touching on the ownership of Affin Bank, Lau said the Sarawak Government’s shareholding made it the first state government in Malaysia to own a bank – a move in line with its goal of attaining greater financial autonomy.
“Relocating the bank’s regional office to Sarawak will also spur growth, especially among local business communities and SMEs,” he said.
Lau stressed that these developments should generate goodwill, not mockery, and called on political leaders from all sides to appreciate the significance of such progress.
“Surely by now, Sarawak politicians from both sides of the divide can see more than just birds.
“Or are some so bankrupt of ideas that their tunnel vision allows them to see nothing else?” He said.
He called on all Sarawakians to take pride in the state’s efforts towards financial independence, and work together in building a better future.
“Let’s all be more mature and refrain from making a mockery of everything that is ours,” he said.
