MIRI: The Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) received a substantial boost to its sporting activities after being awarded a RM150,000 grant from the Youth and Sports Ministry.

The grant was officially presented on Sunday during the Sarawak International Skills Challenge (SISC) 2025, held at Megalanes East in Bintang Megamall here.

Presenting the cheque on behalf of Youth and Sports Minister, Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan, was National Sports Council (MSN) Board member, Alan Ling Sie Kiong.

In her speech read out on her behalf, Yeoh said the grant formed a crucial part of the ministry’s efforts to empower sports development across Malaysia.

“Through this initiative, we hope to support athlete development programmes, tournament organisations, and sports initiatives at all levels from grassroots to international platforms,” she said.

Yeoh added that the grant was not merely financial assistance, but a trust that must be managed with responsibility, transparency, and integrity.

“This funding represents an opportunity to nurture new talent, strengthen existing teams, and elevate national sporting achievements to greater heights,” she said.

Ling, in his address, said the ministry remained committed to encouraging public participation in sports and advancing the nation’s sporting landscape.

He also highlighted the availability of the International Youth Fund (IYF), which is open to applications from local youths under the age of 30.

The grant presentation coincided with the closing ceremony of the SISC 2025, which ran from May 13 to 18 at Megalanes East.

This year’s event attracted a total of 73 participants, with high-level competition witnessed throughout the week.

In the open category, Johnathan Chan Tian Sheng emerged champion, clinching the top prize of RM10,000.

Runner-up, Muhammad Hafiz Zainuddin, took home RM5,000, while Ahmad Muaz Mohd Fishol finished third, earning RM2,500.

Also present was ABAS’ President, Sunny Si Poh Heng.
