INTERNET connectivity in the Murum constituency has reached 96.1 per cent, and further upgrades are expected under the upcoming JENDELA Phase 2 initiative.

Responding to a question raised during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, Telecommunication Deputy Minister, Liwan Lagang, said that efforts to improve digital infrastructure are ongoing.

The federal government, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is currently conducting a joint study with the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA).

The study aims to identify areas without network coverage as well as locations where telecommunication services require upgrading.

“This assessment is being carried out using a ‘fit-for-purpose technology’ approach.

“This means the choice of technology will be tailored to suit local needs and geographical challenges, whether through constructing new telecom towers or deploying satellite-based network solutions,” he said at the First Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 19th DUN sitting today.

The study, now in its final evaluation phase, will inform implementation plans under JENDELA Phase 2, expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Liwan also clarified the differences in coverage between 4G and 5G networks.

“A 4G transmission site typically provides coverage up to a two-kilometre radius, depending on the terrain, while the optimal range for 5G is currently around 500 metres,” he said, underscoring the need for strategic infrastructure planning.

In addition to network expansion, Liwan cited strong take-up of state-led connectivity services.

“As of now, a total of 1,591 subscriptions to the MySRBN broadband service have been recorded in the Murum constituency,” he added, referring to the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation’s (SDEC’s) initiative to provide accessible high-speed Internet to rural and remote communities.

He expressed Sarawak’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring all citizens, regardless of location, can access reliable connectivity.

“This is more than just Internet access, it’s about empowering education, business, and everyday life in rural Sarawak,” he said.
