KUCHING: Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) proudly hosted the 13th Local Workshop by the Asian Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (APSDE), marking the first time the event was held in Borneo.
The workshop focused on advanced luminal endoscopy and drew participation from leading medical experts from Malaysia and abroad.
The event featured hands-on training and live demonstrations of cutting-edge endoscopic techniques, such as Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) and image-enhanced endoscopy – procedures vital for early cancer detection and minimally invasive treatment.
Among the keynote speakers were APSDE President and President of Oita University, Japan, Professor Seigo Kitano; Professor Noriya Uedo from Osaka International Cancer Institute; and Professor Shiaw-Hooi Ho from Universiti Malaya.
SGH Director, Dr Ngian Hie Ung, expressed pride in hosting the workshop, noting its significance in enhancing the skills of local healthcare professionals.
“This workshop represents a step forward in real-time histology and minimally invasive therapeutic techniques,” she said in a statement.
The hospital also extended its appreciation to collaborative partners, including the Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (MSGH) and Olympus, for their logistical and technical support in making the workshop a success.
Dr Victoria Kok Shinq Ling, as Head of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit at SGH, conveyed special thanks to Dr Tan Cha Chee and Dr Ho Yoke Fun for their dedication to the event’s organisation, as well as to the endoscopy assistants and medical officers involved.
“This workshop serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and a driving force towards our aspiration of producing more endoscopy specialists capable of delivering high-quality care to Malaysians, especially in Sarawak,” the statement added.
