A proposal to revise salary rates for community chiefs and allowances for village chiefs will be presented at the third quarter 2025 meeting of the Special Committee on the Management of Community and Village Chief Affairs.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai said the proposal is being fine-tuned to ensure the revised rates are fair and reflect their responsibilities.

“This is to ensure that the proposed rates are reasonable and appropriate in relation to the responsibilities and roles carried out by the Community and Village Chiefs,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 26).

Regarding the issue of salary and allowance increases for community and village chiefs, Sikie said the last adjustment made by the Sarawak government was in 2018, which involved an increase of RM100.

Meanwhile, he said the Sarawak government has, to date, received a total of 923 applications proposing the creation of new community and village chief positions from all divisions across Sarawak.

Sikie said all these applications have been reviewed, taking into account general guidelines including the size of the area, population, and the increase in the number of households in the respective areas.

“These applications will be presented at the Special Committee on the Management of Community and Village Chief Affairs meeting in the third quarter of 2025,” he added.
