SIBU: Twenty students with special needs from SMK Sungai Merah here received special gift from the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu Branch on Wednesday in conjunction with the upcoming Gawai Dayak celebration.

The initiative, led by SDNU Sibu’s Welfare Bureau, specifically benefited students under the Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi (PPKI) from B40 families to ensure that they can share in the joy of the festive season.

SDNU Sibu’s Chairman, Chambai Lindong, said although it was a small gesture, nevertheless it showed a heartfelt effort by all SDNU members to share happiness with the students and their families.

“We believe that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves to experience the joy of celebration,” he said.

Chambai added that it is hoped that these contributions would bring smiles to the faces of the children and their families.

The brief yet touching handover event was attended by SMK Sungai Merah’s Principal, Wong Siew Ling, Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) Sibu’s Chairperson, Angelyn Uchi Maseng, as well as teachers and committee members from SDNU and SIDS Sibu.

Wong expressed her gratitude to SDNU Sibu for their generous outreach, stating that the contributions would help lessen the financial burden on families while also inspire the PPKI students.

“Initiatives like these not only ease the families’ challenges but also serve as motivation for the students,” she said.

She highlighted the importance of collaboration between schools and non-governmental organisations in supporting student’s welfare.

The programme serves as a timely reminder of the spirit of unity, care and inclusiveness among the Dayak community ahead of Gawai, with SDNU Sibu expressing hope that such efforts will continue to inspire others to support those in need and foster stronger communal bonds.
