MIRI: The five-day Barber Take Over event kicked off here yesterday.

The event is a platform for young people and the community to explore the art of barbering, grooming, and entrepreneurial opportunities within the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector and will run until Jun 8.

Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak (DUBS) Miri chairman Mohammad Hafidz Rohani, who praised the event initiative, encouraged more youths to get involved in both technical training and entrepreneurship.

He highlighted the availability of various government grants under Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), such as the State Government for Graduates Towards Entrepreneurship (Gerak) scheme and Technical and Vocational Entrepreneurship Programme (USTEV).

“These grants are open to youths actively participating in technical-based programmes like this and DUBS Miri is also committed to assisting members who are keen to apply for these grants in our effort to further supporting the growth of local talent and businesses,” he said in his speech at the opening ceremony yesterday (Jun 4).

He emphasised that the Barber Take Over event is a celebration of creativity, community, and career-building — empowering the younger generation through skill-based exposure, entrepreneurial insight, and local collaboration.

The event features an exciting line-up of activities, including a thrilling Barber Battle competition, which has attracted nearly 50 participants from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, and Kuala Lumpur, all competing for a total prize pool of RM8,000.

Free haircuts will be provided to 100 individuals by a team of eight professional barbers throughout the five-day event.

The event is organised by Posh Work through strategic partnerships with DUBS Miri branch and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED).
