MIRI: A lively community gathering brought residents of Long Lama together yesterday in a spirited display of unity, as the Sembang Santai Komuniti MADANI programme unfolded in the courtyard of the Telang Usan District Information Office.

The event, which attracted enthusiastic participation from villagers of Kampung Cina and Kampung Kayan, was part of a government initiative under the Malaysia MADANI framework, a national vision that emphasises inclusive, sustainable and values-driven governance.

Organised by the Telang Usan District Information Office, the programme sought to strengthen community bonds while deepening public understanding of ongoing government initiatives. More than a typical information-sharing session, the event was framed as a grassroots dialogue, encouraging residents to connect, exchange views and reinforce mutual respect.

In a nod to the importance of community spirit, the event featured a “Musical Challenge Chair”, a lively take on musical chairs that proved a crowd favourite. Laughter echoed across the grounds as participants of all ages joined in the game, which merged light physical activity with friendly competition.

Community leader Penghulu Desmond Yap Cheng Siang praised the initiative for its positive impact on social cohesion.

“Differences in race and background should never be seen as barriers. In fact, our diversity is our strength. It’s through understanding and tolerance that we build a stronger, more united society,” he said.

He also commended the Telang Usan District Information Office for its continuous engagement with local communities, describing the programme as a “bridge between people and policy”, one that aligns with the broader goals of Malaysia MADANI by nurturing unity at the grassroots level.

As rural communities across Sarawak continue to navigate the challenges of modernisation, initiatives like Sembang Santai Komuniti MADANI highlight how dialogue, inclusivity and local engagement remain at the heart of nation-building.
