KUCHING: At just 33 years of age, Chai Chee Yieng is living each day with the painful reality of Stage 4 cervical cancer.
But despite the immense challenges, Chai continues to fight for her life, holding on to the hope of a brighter future.
“I feel so frustrated and helpless, but I want to be better,” she said in a recent interview with Hope Place, a local charity organisation providing her with assistance.
Chai’s world turned upside down in 2023 when she was first diagnosed with the illness. Once employed as a cashier at a local supermarket, she had to quit her stable job due to her deteriorating health.
Since then, she has been in and out of hospitals, undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
After surgery, she now lives with a tube connected to her kidney to help drain excess fluids. Today, she is extremely weak and depends entirely on her family for care.
Chai resides in Matang with her mother, 63, and younger brother Yeen, 29.
Her mother, who suffers from mobility issues and uses a cane, still manages all the household chores and cooking.
Yeen, who previously worked at a supermarket, had to leave his job to become Chai’s full-time caregiver after her condition worsened.
The family currently has no source of income, relying solely on the RM200 monthly assistance from social welfare. With mounting expenses and no financial stability, they are in constant struggle.
