SAMARAHAN: The 2025 Sarawak Cup Sepak Takraw Championship has been lauded as a vital avenue for youth and women’s sports development.
Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang said she was pleased to witness the participation of all 10 divisions across the state, including encouraging entries from the youth and women’s categories.

“I’m very thankful that this championship has received such a positive response, not just from all divisions, but also from our youth and women athletes.
“This is a meaningful achievement that supports our broader efforts in youth development,” she told reporters when met at the Samarahan Indoor Stadium today.
Rubiah added the tournament plays an important role in identifying new talent, especially among players under 20, who could go on to represent Sarawak in future competitions, particularly at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor.
“This championship, held every two years, focuses not only on giving exposure to women in the sport, but also in scouting new talent who possess technical skill and game intelligence,” she said.
The Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister also commended the Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association (PSS) and its divisional counterparts for their continued commitment to grassroots development, saying they have shown strong potential in nurturing future stars.
“Our hope is that more elite players, especially women, will rise through these ranks and make a strong impact at SUKMA 2026 and beyond,” she added.
Also present at the opening ceremony were Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association (PSS) President Datuk Ismail Abang Saufi and President of the Samarahan Division Sepak Takraw Association (SDTA) Mohd Nizam Wang.
