SIBU: Efforts to produce more skilled workers in the field of renewable energy continue to be strengthened when Universitiy of Technology Sarawak (UTS) and Entera Technology Academy (ETA) are officially recognised as Training and Examination Centres for Solar Photovoltaic System Design (PV).
UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid described the recognition as a historic moment, not only for the institution but also in supporting the country’s green energy agenda, especially in Sarawak.
“This is not just a recognition of our academic and technical capabilities, but also a great trust in accelrating the transition to sustainable and green energy sources,” he said at the UTS Accreditation Certificate Presentation Ceremony as a Training and Examination Centre for PV witnessed by Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, at the UTS premises here on Monday (June 30).
According to Prof Khairuddin, the strategic collaboration between UTS and ETA began in 2018 through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), and has since then actively developed, including involvement in the implementation of the Clean Energy Metering Scheme (CEMS) programme for residential areas in Haiton Residence, Kuching.
The photovoltaic solar system design programme developed as a result of the collaboration also received the touch of international experts through the involvement of Global Sustainable Energy Solutions (GSES) from Australia, which has over 20 years of experience in renewable energy training.
“This programme is responsive to current industry needs and has a great impact in producing highly skilled workforce, in line with Sarawak’s goal of becoming a regional green energy hub.”
Meanwhile, ETA chairman Dr Hatta Taha said that the recognition received paved the way for the provision of training and competency examinations in line with the Electrical Inspection Unit (EIU) guidelines.
“This expertise is important in supporting the implementation of large-scale solar projects such as LSS and floating solar, in addition to ensuring that long-term maintenance aspects can be implemented effectively.”
He added that ETA, together with UTS and technical support from GSES Australia, will continue to be committed to forming a highly skilled local workforce in green technology.
“This initiative directly strengthens the technical training ecosystem in Sarawak and becomes a solid foundation in realising the state’s aspiration to achieve carbon-free status by 2050,” Hatta added.
