KUCHING: A bold new Dayak superhero is set to emerge this Sarawak Day with the official digital launch of Rhemaung Berih: The Origin, a comic that blends indigenous storytelling with dark, evocative themes rooted in Bornean culture.

The comic is created and written by S. Mark and published by an independent comic publishing house, Platipus Studio.

The comic tells the story of Rhemaung Berih, a Bornean warrior who is cast out by his tribe due to the forbidden union of two rival factions.

As a more sinister threat looms on the horizon, Rhemaung is forced to rise beyond exile to protect not just his people, but an entire legacy.

The comic’s release on July 22 is timed to coincide with Sarawak Day, symbolising the birth of a new kind of cultural hero.

Mark said that Rhemaung Berih is about more than just epic battles; it is a deeper reflection on freedom, mental captivity, cultural pride, and the rediscovery of one’s roots.

“It’s not just legend. It’s about freeing your mind and reclaiming your spirit. The story offers an alternative for readers looking for something different.

“It’s darker, more honest, and deeply rooted in the Dayak spirit. It’s not your typical superhero comic,” he added.

Mark also noted that the comic is part of a broader cultural mission aimed at Gen Z readers and young local creators.

The movement behind Rhemaung Berih focuses on four pillars: empowering Dayak youth to embrace their identity, opening doors to creative industries, generating real jobs in the arts, and bringing Dayak culture to the global stage.

“Borneo has its own roar. The world needs to hear it,” he said.

Rhemaung Berih: The Origin promises to deliver a fresh interpretation of indigenous heroism through compelling visual storytelling.

With its strong Dayak cultural foundation, the comic aims to elevate indigenous narratives within the modern creative space.
