KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has announced that the government is exploring plans to expand pickleball infrastructure, following the overwhelming response to the MBKS Community Pickleball Training Month currently underway.

The MBKS Community Pickleball Training Month, which began on July 1 and continues until July 31, is now in full swing with free training sessions held every Saturday at Picklepro Kuching, Tabuan Laru Family Club.

A statement issued today mentioned that the initiative aims to promote a healthy and active lifestyle among Kuching South residents through the fast-growing sport of pickleball.

“This morning, Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, together with Mayor of Kuching South City Council, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, visited the ongoing training session to interact with players and show support for the community sports initiative.

“Exercising regularly is one of the most important ways to stay healthy and prevent illness.

“I am happy to see so many residents taking part in this training,” said Dr Sim during the visit.

He added that the MBKS Community Pickleball Training sessions are a great way to encourage community bonding and physical activity.

“These weekly sessions not only promote a healthy lifestyle but also bring people together. I hope more residents will come forward and take part,” he said.

So far, a total of 168 participants has registered, with more residents still expressing interest to join.

“The strong response shows just how popular pickleball has become. It’s clear this sport is the new trend in Kuching,” said Dr Sim.

He said that in view of the growing demand, he revealed that efforts are underway to provide better access to pickleball facilities.

“We must provide the right infrastructure to support active living,” he said.

He also expressed appreciation to MBKS for their efforts in organising such meaningful community-based programmes.

“I would like to compliment MBKS for initiating and organising this activity, and it is an excellent effort to provide more opportunities for Kuching South residents to stay active and healthy through physical activities,” said Dr Sim.

Residents participating in the training sessions are also getting ready for the upcoming Kuching Festival Mayor’s Pickleball Championship, which will take place on August 2-3, 2025.

The competition features the following categories: Women’s Doubles Open, Men’s Doubles Open, Mixed Doubles Open, and Veteran Men’s Doubles Open.

Participants will compete for attractive prizes, including cash rewards, quality sports equipment, medals, trophies and certificates.

Dr Sim said the championship will be a great platform to promote sportsmanship, strengthen community ties, and showcase the sporting talent.
