DARO: A total of 51 pupils from five primary schools in Daro took their first steps into the world of rugby through the Rimau U-12 Rugby Clinic, held at SK Hijrah Badong on Saturday.

The one-day programme, which ran from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, was part of a grassroots initiative to introduce young students to the fundamentals of rugby while identifying emerging talent and nurturing a sporting culture in rural schools.

Organised by Hijrah Badong Primary School with support from six coaches from Mukah Division Rugby Association (PRBM) and a coach from SK Tanjung Bundung, Bintangor, the clinic aimed to create early exposure to rugby through structured, age-appropriate sessions.

Ten accompanying teachers and 17 organising committee members from SK Hijrah ensured the smooth running of the event.

“Our objective is to give students a solid introduction to rugby, instil positive values like teamwork and discipline, and ultimately, promote a healthy lifestyle.

“We also hope to spark interest in rugby and identify talents who may one day represent the district or even Sarawak,” said Zharif Zhafran Ghazali, the programme coordinator, to Sarawak Tribune when contacted.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in various drills and games focused on core rugby skills such as passing, tackling (in non-contact form), footwork, and spatial awareness – all conducted in a safe, inclusive and fun environment.

Teachers and coaches observed the students closely, noting both skill potential and enthusiasm for the game.

The clinic also served as a platform to strengthen inter-school ties and encourage more schools in the region to incorporate rugby into their co-curricular programmes.

With initiatives like the Rimau U-12 Rugby Clinic, Daro is proving that even in the heart of rural Sarawak, the future of Malaysian rugby can be found – and it starts at school.
